A final work imbued with the pride of Tsutaya Jūzaburō.
Shintai Kaichō Ryaku Engi is a late-period kibyōshi associated with Tsutaya Jūzaburō. Taking the form of a temple “public unveiling” of sacred icons, the work playfully transforms household life into a comic religion: the family business becomes the “Tathāgata of Livelihood,” the ancestors become revered bodhisattvas, and account books and everyday tools are treated as sacred treasures. Through wit, satire, and Edo-period wordplay, it warns against drinking, pleasure quarters, debt, vanity, and reckless spending.
In his final years, Tsutaya suffered from beriberi and endured harsh punishment under the Kansei-era publishing restrictions, including the confiscation of much of his property. Even so, he never abandoned his pride as a publisher.
This work carries the spirit of a man who, even in hardship, continued to sell books, make books, and laugh through books. Filled with Edo humor, practical wisdom, and the stubborn dignity of a publisher to the very end, Shintai Kaichō Ryaku Engi is a remarkable example of comic “household Buddhism” in yellow-cover fiction.
